Game Highlights

For the second time in his last two starts, Tyler Kirby went the distance on the mound, The only difference is that this time, he recorded his first win of the season. Kirby, who has excellent control, walked only one allowing 3 earned runs en-route to a 6-4 win over Tabb. Kirby has issued just three walks in his last 15 innings. Lafayette had a season high 9 hits, 4 of which came with two and runners on base. Lafayette jumped to a 1-0 lead in the Second inning when Andy Antle drove a hard hit line drive to Left Center to drive in Tyler Wiltshire. Wiltshire entered the game as a Courtesy Runner for catcher Graham Kennis. Kennis hit a 0-1 pitch to Right for an opposite field single. Wiltshire then stole second before scoring on Antle’s single. Tabb jumped right back in their half of the 3rd inning. Page led off with a sharply hit ball to Right Center that he stretched into a double with some good hustle. Phifer walked and Ferebee hit a long fly ball down the Right Field line for a bases clearing Triple. Gore then grounded softly back to the pitcher. Ferebee broke on contact for the plate, where he was easily tagged out by Kennis. Lafayette SS Jeremiah Antle then made an exceptional defensive play snagging a grounder in the hole between SS and Third, and getting the force out at Second. Antle ended the day with 4 put-outs and 6 assists that included another catch and throw on a hard hit short hop. Freedman singled to put runners on First and Second with two out. Arthur then doubled to Left Center that just eluded a diving Austin Cohn. However, Centerfielder Solomon McCray was quick to back up the play and got the ball back in the infield. Buffkin scored on the hit, but the excellent play of McCray prevented another run. Kirby then got Norris to ground-out to end the inning. If not for the great defensive efforts by Jeremiah Antle and McCray, the inning could have been even bigger for Tabb. Lafayette jumped ahead for good in the bottom of the 3rd inning scoring 4 times on 3 hits, a walk, and an error. Matt Keane led off with a single to left. He was forced out at Second on a failed sacrifice bunt attempt. Austin Cohn followed with a walk. McCray hit an infield pop-up and the umpires quickly invoked the Infield Fly rule. The ball was dropped, but Antle and Cohn held their bases at Second and First, respectively. Warren Atkins then had the biggest hit of the day for Lafayette with a rope down the Third Base line that went for a double and scored both Antle and Cohn. Atkins, always looking to display his lightning fast speed on the base paths, thought about going to Third, but Lafayette manager and Third Base coach Rick Schenk had other ideas and correctly held him at Second. Kirby singled to Left Center to drive home Atkins, who made a tremendous slide at the plate to avoid the tag. Kirby reached Second on the throw home and was replaced by Zach Dorcy. Kennis then popped up to the left side of the infield, but the ball fell for an error. Dorcy was hustling all the way from Second with two-out and scored easily when the ball dropped. Kirby responded by retiring 9 of the next 11 batters he faced, keeping Tabb at bay. Lafayette threatened again in the 4th inning with two out and nobody on, but failed to score. They did push another run across in the 5th inning on an RBI single by Daniel Blankinship. With two out and nobody on base Wiltshire walked and stole Second, before scoring on Blankinship’s clutch two-out single. Tabb had a good start to the 7th inning when Phifer singled up the middle and moved to Second on Ferebee’s single to Left. The rally pretty much ended their, however, when Gore grounded out to Third, Buffkin hit a Sac Fly to Center, scoring Phifer, and Freedman ended the game with a soft liner to SS. It was fitting that Jeremiah Antle caught the last out on a day where he was not only flawless defensively, but also made plays that affect the outcome and normally go unrecognized in game articles. It was a great team effort for Lafayette.
