Two area stars commit to Liberty
Two of the Peninsula District's top baseball players will be teammates in college.
Denbigh rising senior Christopher McDougal, who played third base, caught and pitched as the Patriots won the Eastern Region championship last season, and first-team Daily Press all-star selection Kizuku Scott, a rising senior shortstop at Bethel, have both committed to Liberty University.
"I went up there for a visit, and I just fell in love with it," said McDougal, who also visited William and Mary and had planned a trip to Radford before canceling it after his stay in Lynchburg. "I fell in love with the coaches. I'd heard great things about the coaches. It was an offer I just couldn't turn down."
McDougal's scholarship is for both academics and athletics.
McDougal plays on the same area showcase team as Scott and several other PD players. He said Scott committed to Liberty first, "and then I heard from one of my friends on the way up there that he committed. I said, 'Oh, man.' "
McDougal is happy to have his college choice made.
"I can just relax and play and try to win baseball games now in high school," he said.
McDougal's Denbigh team lost seven starters - including pitcher Ethan Carter, who transferred to Menchville - and longtime coach Rusty Ingram, but McDougal remains confident about his senior season.
"We have a lot of young kids, but we have a bunch of hard workers," he said. "I think it's gonna be a big loss and a lot of shoes to fill, (but) we're not gonna be how a lot of people think we're gonna be. We're gonna be a good team. ... If they write us off, then when they come and play us, we can show them that we're not that bad."
