Daily Press All-Stars
Daily Press All-Stars: Boys basketball compiled by Jason Jordan and Jennifer Williams Player of the year DARRYL SHAZIER, SENIOR, MENCHVILLE Led the Monarchs to the Eastern Region semifinals and averaged 15 points per game. Shazier, a Bucknell signee, was the catalyst for the Monarchs on both ends of the floor. Shazier came into the season with a reputation for lighting up the scoreboard after leading the league in scoring during his junior year, but this season he sacrificed his scoring and ran the team. Shazier’s shooting ability is well documented, but this season his key assets included his speed and ability to move the ball in transition. An outlet pass to Shazier often meant an easy transition score. But while his passing ability was much improved this year, in the ER semifinal loss to Booker T. Washington (65-61), Shazier did all he could offensively to win it for the Monarchs, pouring in 20 points while wearing a defensive blanket for the entire game. He was named first-team all-district and first-team all-region. First team RICARDO RATLIFFE Year: Junior. School: Kecoughtan. Led the Peninsula District in scoring with 26 points per game and as a result was named the district’s Player of the Year. At 6-7, Ratliffe was a matchup problem for nearly every team and scored in a variety of ways. REGINALD HICKS Year: Senior. School: Hampton. Led the Crabbers to the Eastern Region tournament and averaged 17 points and 12 rebounds per game. Hicks was tough to defend because at his height (6-4) he could handle the ball, blow past his defender, knock down the 3 and find the open man. PIERRE BROWN Year: Senior. School: Jamestown. The forward averaged 18.1 points and nine rebounds per game to lead Jamestown to Bay Rivers District regular-season and tournament titles. He was chosen Bay Rivers Player of the Year and first-team all-Region I, as well as second-team all-state Group AA. MARK TYLER Year: Senior. School: Bruton. Tyler averaged 15.9 points and six rebounds per game to help lead Bruton to the state Group AA quarterfinals. He was chosen first-team all-Bay Rivers District and first-team all-Region I, as well as honorable mention all-state. MARSHAWN POWELL Year: Sophomore. School: Menchville. In his first year with the Monarchs, Powell established himself as the best low-post threat in the Peninsula District. He averaged 12 points, nine rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game and helped the Monarchs to PD regular-season and tournament titles, as well as the Eastern Region semifinals. Second team Mike Lyons, junior, Woodside. Conley Taylor, senior, Menchville. Brandon Moyler, senior, Lafayette. Steven Bennett, junior, Jamestown. Gene Efird, junior, Poquoson. Steven Sherwood, sophomore, Tabb. Jake Capin, senior, Gloucester. Tyrod Taylor, senior, Hampton. Jontel Evans, sophomore, Bethel. Daniel Griggs, senior, Walsingham Academy. |
