PREVIEW - Surry County

2006: 7-5, 2-2.
COACH: Ervin Jones, fifth year (27-18).
SCHOOL COLORS: Blue and gold.
SCHOOL PHONE: (757) 267-2211.
WEB SITE: www.surryschools.net
HOME STADIUM: William Miller Athletic Facility.
LAST YEAR IN PLAYOFFS: 2006.
KEY GAME: Oct. 12 at Franklin. Surry split with the Broncos last year, avenging a 28-22 regular season loss with an 18-9 playoff victory. This season a road win could spark a district championship run.
OUTLOOK: Eighteen seniors return from a team that advanced to the second round of the playoffs in 2006. “I’m setting our expectations high,” Jones said, “They have that taste in their mouths.” Speed is the key ingredient that could make the Cougars dangerous on offense and stingy on defense. Senior tailback Geoffrey Warren, the leading returning rusher, and senior fullback Craig Evans will need to provide offensive punch while sophomore Montel White and older brother Kenneth step up to replace last year’s quarterback Donovan Ellis, who will miss much of the season due to major surgery. Jones thinks Montel’s 6-4, 185-pound frame and strong arm will make him the eventual starter trying to get the ball downfield to senior wideouts Travis Howell (all-district in 2006), Demetric Brown and brother Kenneth. Seven starters return from a defense that posted three shutouts. Senior linebacker Trenton Porter (6-3, 215) is speedy for his size and is the core of the unit. Last year he recorded 111 tackles and 51 assists. Versatile senior Jermaine Minerve (6-3, 195) and Evans provide solid containment from the defensive line, while Kenneth White and Marquis Warren stabilize the secondary. Jones says the defense will need to harness its team speed to avoid giving up the big play through over-pursuit.
