Tabb 10, Poquoson 4

STORY: Tabb 10, Poquoson 4
By Jason Jordan

YORK — Tabb High third baseman Brandon Deyerle wasn’t worried at all.

Sure, his Tigers had just given up three runs to Poquoson in the top of the second inning, but Deyerle saw that as an opportunity.

“We took that as motivation,” Deyerle said. “We know that our strength is hitting, and once we got going, they couldn’t stop us.”

Tabb (3-0) reeled off six runs on six hits in the bottom of the second and never looked back in a 10-4 win Friday over the Islanders at Tabb.

“The difference today was our bunt game,” Tabb coach Doug Baggett said. “Today was the first time I’ve seen the kids over the last three years beginning to understand the importance of the bunt game. That’s what kept them in trouble pretty much for the whole game.”

After Poquoson (2-1) turned in a three-run, four-hit inning in the top of the second, Tabb got on the board in the bottom of the second when pinch runner Jeff Schurott scored on a Poquoson throwing error. Then Brice Earnhardt’s bunt scored Gerald Zingraf.

Tabb took the lead when Adam McConnell drove in Deyerle and Earnhardt on a single to center field. The Tigers scored two more runs in that inning to go up 6-3.

After the Islanders scored in the top of the third, Zingraf sent Tyler Baker’s fastball over the center-field fence to counter.

Tabb’s Cody Brown pitched a complete game and, after the Islanders’ big second inning, only gave up three hits and struck out five batters the rest of the way.

The Tigers also managed 13 hits, something Deyerle said should be standard for Tabb.

“That’s probably a normal outing for us,” he said. “Lately we haven’t been showing that, but I think after this, we’ll keep the bats going.”

Baggett added: “Baseball is about 60 percent mental, and maybe a game like this will relax them so they can keep it going.”
