Daily Press all-stars
Swimmer of the year
SCOTT MADARAS, SENIOR, HAMPTON ROADS ACADEMY Scott Madaras beat all of the best other local swimmers this season without ever competing against them in a high school meet. He did it by conquering a swimmer’s cruelest and most critical opponent: the clock. As Madaras led the Navigators to the private-school Division II state championship, he managed to breeze past the times set by swimmers who compete for local public-school powers Jamestown and Lafayette. Madaras had the area’s best times in the 100-yard butterfly and 100, 200 and 500 freestyle. He won the 100 butterfly and 100 freestyle at the state meet, at which he was the most outstanding boys swimmer. Madaras, who was Daily Press Swimmer of the Year in 2006, will compete at the University of Denver, where he plans to study physics and engineering. Of course, it doesn’t take a physics whiz to figure out that, in swimming, all that matters is beating the clock. First team Matt Baumler, Brent Harkins, Ben LeRose, Kurt Linkenauger Lafayette, 200 medley relay The Rams swam the area’s four fastest times and won the Group AA state meet in 1:38.53, helping their team to a second-place finish behind Jamestown. Drew Crockett also competed on the team at points during the season, but LeRose was on the state championship relay. Scott Madaras Hampton Roads Academy, senior, 200 freestyle His 1:44.54 at the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools meet was almost two seconds faster than the time of the area’s next-fastest swimmer in this event: Jamestown junior Corydon Butler, who swam 1:46.35 to finish second at state. Kohl Hurdle Warwick, freshman, 200 individual medley He had the area’s three fastest times, the best being a meters-converted 1:57.57 at the Group AAA state meet. He really swam 2:10.37 to place fifth. In a yards pool, he swam 1:57.72 at the Kecoughtan Invitational, finishing second to senior Bobby Walsh of Ocean Lakes in Virginia Beach, who was third at state. Scott Cutler Jamestown, sophomore, 50 freestyle He had the area’s three fastest times and six of the top eight. His best was 21.90 at state. He finished fourth but helped the Eagles win their second consecutive state championship. Scott Madaras Hampton Roads Academy, senior, 100 butterfly He was the only area swimmer to crack 50 seconds, swimming 49.89 at the TCIS and state meets. He won by 2½ seconds at the state meet. In the local standings, he topped Lafayette’s Baumler, whose best time was 50.81 to win state. Scott Madaras Hampton Roads Academy, senior, 100 freestyle He really blew away the competition in this event. His best time was 46.57 at state, which he won by 1½ seconds. Madaras swam his second-best time — and the area’s second-best — when he clocked 47.41 in the state preliminaries. Cutler had the area’s third-best time, 48.18, good for a sixth-place state finish in Group AA. Scott Madaras Hampton Roads Academy, senior, 500 freestyle In December, he swam 4:46.01, a time that stood as the area’s best all season. It would have placed him third at Group AA state, at which Jamestown senior Parker Field finished sixth by clocking 4:51.08. Field swam 4:50.23 in qualifying, the area’s second-best time this year. Matt Baumler, Drew Crockett, Brent Harkins, Kurt Linkenauger Lafayette, 200 freestyle relay Beat Jamestown’s relay to win state in 1:28.40. The Eagles’ state time, 1:28.84, was their best of the season but couldn’t eclipse the area’s second-best time, 1:28.67, which Lafayette swam at the Kecoughtan Invitational. Matt Baumler Lafayette, junior, 100 backstroke Slammed the competition. His best time was 51.75. No other area swimmer clocked better than 54.06. Baumler had the area’s six fastest times, and his 51.75 not only won at state but also broke the state record of 52.14, set in 2001 by Jamestown’s John Hartman. Mason Wilcox Menchville, sophomore, 100 breaststroke Just like last year, when he was first-team in this event, he swam his and the area’s best time at the Kecoughtan Invitational. But his time this year was 1:00.46, compared with 1:01.04 last year. He finished fourth at state. Corydon Butler, Scott Cutler, Parker Field, Jon Keltner Jamestown, 400 freestyle relay This is the only swimming event the Eagles won at state. Their 3:15.44 was almost three seconds faster than the second-place team. In the local standings, only Hampton Roads Academy’s 3:20.79 came close to Jamestown, which had the area’s top five times. Mike Newcomb Jamestown, senior, diving He won his second consecutive state title with a 342.45, but his best performance came at the Bay Rivers District meet, in which he scored 382.25. No other area diver scored better than 311.60. Second team 200 medley relay: Hampton Roads Ac. (Greg Bird, Mitchell Finch, Brian Landry, Scott Madaras). 200 freestyle: Corydon Butler, Jamestown, junior. 200 individual medley: Parker Field, Jamestown, senior. 50 freestyle: Kurt Linkenauger, Lafayette, junior. 100 butterfly: Matt Baumler, Lafayette, junior. 100 freestyle: Scott Cutler, Jamestown, sophomore. 500 freestyle: Parker Field, Jamestown, senior. 200 freestyle relay: Jamestown (Scott Cutler, Corydon Butler, Parker Field, Joe Niewola). 100 backstroke: James Li, York, junior. 100 breaststroke: Brent Harkins, Lafayette, senior. 400 freestyle relay: Hampton Roads Academy (Greg Bird, Mitchell Finch, Brian Landry, Scott Madaras). Diving: Patrick Russell, Jamestown, senior. |
