Outdoor season opens
Lafayette’s Garrick Piggott and Hampton’s Lavell Handy were the top two finishers in the boys triple jump Saturday during the All-American Track Classic at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond. The event inaugurated the outdoor track and field season for local athletes. Piggott, a Group AA state title-winner in the indoor season, jumped 45 feet, 5 inches, edging Handy’s 45-2¼.
Of the few local teams represented, Lafayette’s tie for eighth in the boys division was the best finish. Phoebus posted the best girls finish (15th), thanks to freshman Niaimani Aduma’s fourth-place finishes in the triple jump and 400 meters, as well as fifth in the long jump.
Jamestown won the boys distance medley in just more than 11 minutes, and Tabb’s Will Mulherin took first in the 3,000 meters in 9 minutes, 21.54 seconds. York’s Shakia Smith tossed the discus 106 feet to capture the girls crown.
