Rams' 353 rushing yards flatten Poquoson

By CHRIS LANCIA | HRVarsity Correspondent

POQUOSON — Lafayette was far from perfect on Friday night, but the effort was good enough to keep a perfect season intact.

The Rams barely produced more yards than they surrendered in rolling to a 28-18 win over Poquoson. Several big plays and an unrelenting rushing attack were the keys to the victory at Poquoson Middle School.

Lafayette (3-0 overall, 2-0 Bay Rivers District) ran for 353 yards, attempting just two passes all night, and got three scoring plays of 30 yards or longer.

Poquoson’s Eric Nixon took advantage of a soft secondary for an 18-for-30 passing performance, finishing with 203 yards and one touchdown.

"They threw the ball well tonight, and we couldn’t get any pressure on (the quarterback)," said Lafayette coach Paul Wheeler.

Wingbacks saved the night for the Rams, as Garrick Piggott and T.J. Ptachick combined for 255 yards and all four of Lafayette’s touchdowns.

Both were receivers a year ago, but Wheeler moved them around in the preseason and has been pleased with the results.

"We run the ball, that’s who we are," Wheeler said. "Sometimes you have to move some personnel around in order to find the talent, and it’s worked for us so far this year."

Nixon kept Poquoson (1-2, 1-1) in the game, scrambling out of trouble and finding his third or fourth option on several plays. He also ran for 56 yards and kicked two 32-yard field goals, and found Dell Bryce open for a 14-yard touchdown pass to end the game.

"We saw some good things tonight, but we clearly have some things to work," Wheeler said. "We’re a day-by-day team right now, and we know we’ve got to keep getting better."
