STORY: Smithfield 47, Warhill 0
Roberts, Packers overwhelm Warhill By Jason Jordan | jjordan@dailypress.com JAMES CITY - The last time Smithfield High made the trip to James County City Stadium, running back Dyrell Roberts was looking for someone to take his frustrations out on after a heartbreaking loss to Lafayette the week before. That somebody was Jamestown. The result? Six touchdowns, 222 rushing yards and even a touchdown pass in a win. On Saturday night, Roberts and the Packers were back with the same scenario, and this time Warhill was that somebody. The result? In basically two quarters, Roberts carried the ball seven times for 181 yards and three touchdowns and returned two punts for touchdowns in the Packers’ 47-0 romp of Warhill. “I was trying to outdo what I did the last time I was here,” Roberts said. “Warhill is a good team and they’ll be a force to be reckoned with in a few years, but we had the game in control. It would’ve been nice to play longer, but that stuff doesn’t matter.” Roberts got things going on special teams, returning a Warhill (0-5, 0-4) punt 42 yards for the Packers’ (3-2, 2-2) first score with 7 minutes, 45 seconds left in the first quarter. That gave them an early 6-0 lead. After the Lions went three-and-out on the next series, Roberts returned the Lions’ punt 33 yards for the next score. They led 13-0 midway through the first quarter. Roberts ran two more touchdowns, Privette threw one to Ralph Williams, then Privette ran one in himself to help the Packers build a 40-0 lead at the half. Of the eight times Roberts touched the ball, including the punt returns, he scored four times. “I was just so much faster than everyone else,” Roberts said. “They’re a young team, and they made some mistakes, but like I said they played hard.” The Packers managed 208 yards of offense in the first half, but their defensive effort was even better. They held the Lions to minus-9 rushing yards and 19 passing yards. “I know what it’s like to be in that situation,” Smithfield coach Chris Fraser said. “I had a team score 72 points on me my first year at Jamestown. There was no need for that. We played hard. They’re scrappy.” On the first play of the second half Roberts rolled 65 yards for a touchdown to extend the Packers’ lead 47-0. Fraser pulled Roberts after that and let him serve as offensive coordinator for the rest of the game. Roberts managed 113 yards of offense from the sideline. “I didn’t get a touchdown so I’ve got a little work to do,” Roberts said. “But I’ve got a few more years of playing to get more experience before I’m just play-calling.” Fraser added: “I told him for the plays that went bad, I was going to go sit in the stands and yell at him. I didn’t want to leave him in the game, we always joke about the movie “Friday Night Lights” when the star running back went in at the end and got hurt. We still have another half of a season to go. We’re going to get ready for Poquoson now.” SMITHFIELD 47, WARHILL 0 Smithfield 132770 — 47 Warhill 0000 — 0 S — Roberts 42 punt return (kick failed) S — Roberts 33 punt return (Jones kick) S — Roberts 37 run (Jones kick) S — Privette 16 pass to Williams (Jones kick) S — Roberts 30 run (Jones kick) S — Privette 27 run (kick failed) S — Roberts 65 run (Jones kick) S W First downs 14 3 Rushes-yards 33-320 17-4 Passing yards 66 19 Comp-Att-Int 3-3-0 4-19-0 Penalties-yards 9-78 4-22 Fumbles-lost 1-1 1-0 Punts-avg. 0-0 5-29

Re: STORY: Smithfield 47, Warhill 0
Smithfield was dominant as you would expect but got to tell ya, I am quickly becoming a little bit of a Warhill fan. You got to give those kids a lot of credit. Smithfield just physicaly abused them. Thier were Lions layed out all over the field last night. They got up, shook it off and came back for more. Kids with less heart would have just called it a night. Great fans to, kept cheering and stayed in the stands right to the end.

I know someone earlier in the week said to watch out for the cheap shots but I didn't see anything like that, a classy bunch of kids who played with Lion Hearts, Warhill faithful should be very proud of that bunch of kids. In two years? Who knows? Maybe they'll be counting power points......

Packer Backer we finally agee!! I saw a lot of good things from the Warhill kids last night. I had no idea that QB was a Freshman! He is going to get a lot of attention in the next few years. Most impressed with the lack of penalties they picked up. Thats always difficult with a new and young team Coach Lemn is doing something right.
Great job from the Packers tonight. |

Another thing I noticed about Cvengros, he took a few bruising shots last night, dusted himself off and went right back at it. Can't coach that - that's an internal fire....I love seeing that in athletes. Packer Fan, I'm sure that there are a LOT of things that we can agree on. I just got frustrated last week with the shot you took, that's all. I know how much WE love and admire our Packers, I'd rather see the positive things discussed on here and let the coaches handle the "Need to be worked on things". I think it's counter-productive to rip the kids and coaches on an open forum. They already know what they have to work on.....that's why they watch game films and practice everyday. It's all good.
