Davenport named Peninsula-area Player of the Week

We’re used to seeing Dominik Davenport, Phoebus’ junior two-way lineman, dominate the line of scrimmage. We’re not used to seeing him be a touchdown machine.

His first on Saturday night came as teammate Lavonte Battle fumbled into the end zone following a 22-yard run. Davenport, all 235 pounds of him, dove for the ball and out-wrestled everyone else for it.

But his moment of glory came late in the first half as Phantom wideout Reid Evans caught a pass from quarterback Tajh Boyd. Just as he was about to go down at the Heritage 22-yard line, Evans pitched the ball to Davenport. The kid known as "Baby D" showed his nimble side by racing in for the touchdown to highlight Phoebus’ 38-12 win.

"I was calling to him, ‘Reid, Reid, pitch it to me!’" Davenport said. "I was surprised he did."

Davenport finished with 14 tackles, including a sack, but the touchdowns helped earn him Daily Press Player of the Week honors.

There were other candidates — Smithfield’s Dyrell Roberts ran for 181 yards on seven carries and added two punt returns for touchdowns; Hampton quarterback Matthew Mitchell completed 13-of-22 passes for 205 yards — but Davenport went above and beyond.

I played ball with baby d's dad. I'm happy for the both of them. I talked too his dad at the phoebus/heritage game and he couldn't be more proud of his son. I know i'm a crab, but congrats BABY D!!!!

Yeah thats Rock's son...the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.....Rock actually put fear in players probably even his own teammates....he was a beast....and his son will probably be a tad bit better when its all said and done...I know he will be alot stronger than rock....

and dave johnson, baby d also blocked an XP dont forget he plays on those teams too
