STORY: Kecoughtan coach charged with pot, alcohol possession

Kecoughtan coach suspended without pay

By David Macauley | dmacauley@dailypress.com

HAMPTON - — A veteran high school history teacher and basketball coach is on leave without pay after drugs and alcohol were found in his car during a routine inspection Tuesday, police and school officials said.

Cary Forrest, a U.S. history teacher who has been the boys basketball coach at Kecoughtan High School since 2002, was served a summons and charged with possession of marijuana and alcohol on school grounds after about six marijuana seeds and several unopened beer bottles were found inside his car in the school parking lot, said Hampton schools spokeswoman Ann Stephens.

The discovery was made by canine officers from Hampton police during a routine search. "These are random searches," Stephens said.

Hampton police spokeswoman Paula Ensley confirmed Forrest was charged with two misdemeanor offenses.

Forrest, who has been worked at the school since 1989, is on leave without pay. He was appointed Kecoughtan's boys basketball coach in 2002 after coaching the Warriors' junior varsity.

A Hampton native, he is a Bethel High and Christopher Newport University graduate.

I believe the coach graduated from Phoebus and he played some basketball at Phoebus.
