Group AAA all-state team

Hampton's Davis, Six honored
Associated Press

RICHMOND, Va. - Her trip to a state championship ended in the state semifinals, but Jasmine Thomas of Oakton still had no peer in Group AAA this season.

That was the feeling of state sports writers who made the 5-foot-9 senior the overwhelming choice as The Associated Press player of the year in the classification.

Thomas averaged 25.9 points, 8.2 rebounds and 5.1 assists for team that was 27-3 and lost to eventual state champion Hampton in state semifinals. She finished with 2,578 career points, the second-highest total ever among girls in the Virginia High School League. She also had 901 career rebounds, 504 assists and 519 steals.

She's joined on the first team by Tiffany Davis of state champion Hampton, Kim Rodgers of Princess Anne, Doreena Campbell of Edison and Joniquia Guilford of Wilson.

The coach of the year is Hampton's David Six, whose team used a game-ending 13-5 run to rally past Edison 46-45 in the championship game. The Crabbers were 30-2.

Davis, a 5-7 sophomore, averaged 18.3 points, 6 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 4 steals. She has already scored more than 1,000 points in two years, and had a quadruple-double with 33 points, 12 assists, 11 steals and 10 rebounds in a 117-25 win over Warwick. Her career best of 43 points came against Gloucester in the district quarterfinals.

Rodgers, a 5-9 senior, averaged 22.9 points and 6 rebounds as team won its ninth regular-season Beach District title in 10 years. She finished with 1,878 points.

Campbell, a 5-10 senior, averaged 21 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists.

Guilford, a 5-11 junior, averaged 26.9 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. She had 10 30-point games and scored her high of 40 against Norview.

The second team includes senior Ebony Patterson of L.C. Bird, juniors Lynetta Kizer of Potomac and Chay Shegog of Brooke Point, and sophomores Ta'Shauna Rodgers of King's Fork and Tierra Ruffin-Pratt of T.C. Williams.
