STORY: Jamestown boys, Mulherin win in Region I

Jamestown boys, Mulherin win in Region I

Bay Rivers District boys fared better than their female counterparts at the Region I meet Thursday at Loriella Park in Fredericksburg.

As expected, Jamestown ran away with the boys’ team crown, placing four runners in the top five. But the non-Eagle among that group won the 5-kilometer race: Tabb’s Will Mulherin in 16:25.71.

John Holt was second in 16:44.65 to lead the bevy of Eagles, followed by Andrew Colley in 16:58.17, Colin Mearns in 17:02.58 and Russell Hornsby in 17:17.03.

Mulherin was the runner-up to Colley at last week’s district meet.

The Eagles scored 20 points, followed by James Monroe at 92, Grafton at 99 and Chancellor at 100. Those four teams qualified for the state meet, which, like the AAA competition, is Nov. 10 at Great Meadow. Lafayette was fifth at 112.

In the girls’ race, Battlefield District teams took the top two team positions and the top four individual spots.

Chancellor won with 29 points, followed by James Monroe (74), Jamestown (120) and New Kent (121), the other state qualifiers. Lafayette’s girls (129), like its boys, were fifth. Bay Rivers meet champion Tabb was sixth with 144.

JM’s Rebecca Clemo took the individual title in 20:25.75, and three Chancellor Chargers followed her. Bay Rivers champion Rachel Apostoles of Jamestown led her district’s competitors, placing fifth in 21:01.93. Grafton’s Haley Kopczynski was eighth in 21:07.39.

The top 15 individuals of each gender will race at state.

Longtime Tabb coach George Coulter enjoyed Mulherin's showing.

"He just ran with a lot more determination (than he did in the district meet) and stayed with it the whole way," Coulter said. "He didn't look like he was under a lot of stress in the lead. I was quite pleased with his performance.

"He had a good week of preparation for the race. That course is very challenging, hills and the general layout."

Coulter said one of the Tigers' girls fell down in "a mishap in the woods," hurting the team's finish, but said Tabb had a fine season. He pointed out that Amanda Jones, who played for Tabb's Bay Rivers co-champion field hockey team, qualified for state individually by placing 14th in 21:38.53.

"All of them will be back next year," he said.
