Girls indoor track: Bay Rivers preview

In a highly competitive district, health and injuries might determine who finishes on top. The cross country season produced a district championship that closely bunched Tabb, New Kent, Jamestown, Lafayette and Grafton. Something similar could happen in indoor track. The schools with larger pools of athletes can better pad their depth and minimize the impact of injury, so Jamestown, Grafton, Lafayette and Tabb look like to be the best.

TOP THREE TEAMS

® Jamestown: The Eagles return some of the top performers from a squad that won the 2007 district outdoor title and finished second in the indoor championships in February.

® Grafton: Michelle Speede’s explosive emergence in the 2007 outdoor season pushed the Clippers from fifth in the indoor district championships to second. A continuation of that ascension could make first place attainable.

® Lafayette: The combination of a traditionally solid program and good current talent should keep the Rams in the title hunt.

TOP THREE INDIVIDUALS

® Nakia Williams, sophomore, Bruton: Williams’ versatility makes her a point-producing machine. In the 2007 indoor district championships, she won the long and triple jumps, and was second in the 55 and 300 meters.

® Michelle Speede, sophomore, Grafton: Living up to her name, Speede zipped to district titles in the 100, 200 and 400 meters in the outdoor district meet as a freshman.

® Rachel Apostoles, junior, Jamestown: As reigning district champion in the outdoor 800 and 1,600 meters, as well as cross country, Apostoles is clearly a favorite in the distance events.
