Big victory for Lafayette on Thursday

Suspicions that this could be Lafayette's year to win the Bay Rivers District looked quite reasonable after the Rams' 8-1 victory Thursday at Poquoson.

Tori Ford, by far Lafayette's most experienced tournament player, joined teammates Annie Goode, Ali Wheeler, Madeline Jones, Lizzie Mitchell and Allie Mitchell in the winners' circle against a pretty good Islanders team.

After seeing this score, and the Jamestown girls' domination of the Newport News Invitational, it looks apparent that those two teams easily will head to the playoffs. Their head-to-head matchup well could be for the district title -- and maybe the Region I championship too. I'm waiting for a third team to enter the discussion, but who will that be?

Meanwhile, first-place Menchville (9-0 over Phoebus) and Denbigh (9-0 against Hampton) showed no signs of relinquishing their stranglehold on Peninsula competition. It looks like the other teams are just playing for third place right now.
