Lacrosse is a Girl's Game
by Carl Albuquerque
That's right. Lacrosse is for girls, especially girls from Virginia. The Yorktown Lady Titans continue to grow in "the fastest game on two feet". Established in 2006, the Girls program of Yorktown Lacrosse (www.yorktownlacrosse.com) started with a handful of girls from York, Grafton and Tabb school districts.
Now, the Yorktown Lady Titans have 80 girls from 6th grade to 12th grade. In the Grafton District alone, there are almost as many girls playing as there are boys. Each spring, the Yorktown Lady Titans compete against teams from Williamsburg, Menchville, Norfolk, and Virginia Beach.
Girl's lacrosse doesn't stop at the High School level. Christopher Newport University, Old Dominion University, and the College of William and Mary all have women's lacrosse. The University of Virginia women were the Division 1 NCAA Champions in 2004. In fact, lacrosse is one of the fastest growing team sports in the United States.
Why the popularity? Lacrosse combines the stamina of soccer, the speed of field hockey, and the dexterity of basketball all in one sport. Similar to the boy's game, the girls play on a field the size of a football field. Eleven players and one goalie play the game in Defense, Midfield, and Attack positions. Good eye/hand coordination and teamwork are tested as a rubber ball slightly smaller than a baseball is moved around the field. Players pass, scoop, and carry the ball with a netted lacrosse stick, known as a "crosse". An exhilarating sport, lacrosse is fast-paced and full of action. Long sprints up and down the field with abrupt starts and stops, precision passes and dodges are routine in both men's and women's lacrosse.
