Girls basketball

Total fouls — Northampton 19, Middlesex 9. The Middlesex girls basketball team has earned a state tournament berth, and in memorable fashion. The heroics of Sherita Burse led the Chargers to a come-from-behind 58-56 overtime home victory Thursday against Northampton in a Region A Division 2 semifinal. Middlesex will play at Lancaster for the championship at 6 p.m. Saturday, and both teams will play in the Division 2 state quarterfinals after that. Northampton (11-9) led by seven points with 1:40 left in regulation, but top-seeded Middlesex applied defensive pressure to rally. Burse sank a 3-pointer with about 15 seconds left, forcing overtime. In the extra period, the teams traded points until Burse hit two free throws with less than a minute remaining. Northampton committed a turnover, and the Chargers went to a four-corners stall to run out the clock. Ashae Burnett had 18 points and 14 rebounds, Burse scored 16 and Katrina Reed had eight points and eight assists for the Chargers. Northampton's top scorers were Crystal Chavous with 18 points, Teaira Harman with 13 and Tymeka Smith with 12. Last edited by Sonny Dearth : 02-28-2008 at 10:08 PM. |
