Swimmer of the year
MATT BAUMLER, SENIOR, LAFAYETTE
The Virginia Tech-bound Baumler finished his high school career by sweeping the 100-yard butterfly and 100 backstroke in the Bay Rivers District meet, then winning the 100 fly (50.91 seconds) and finishing second in the 100 back (52.31) at the Group AA state meet.
He set the state record in the 100 back as a junior, but fell short as a senior when Waynesboro’s Alvaro Vega, a Spanish exchange student, edged him by 0.31 of a second.
In this year’s Kecoughtan Invitational, competing against some of the top swimmers in southeastern Virginia, he won the 100 fly by three-quarters of a second and the 100 back by more than half a second.
Baumler finished his high school career with six individual gold medals and seven relay golds at the state meet. In individual races or relay events, he or his team never finished lower than second.

Re: Story: Daily Press All-Stars
baumler only had 9 state golds....not 13
none in 04 05
1st in 100 back 200 free relay and 200 medley relay in 05 06 (3)
1st in 100 back 100 fly 200 free relay and 200 medley relay in 06 07 (4)
1st in 100 fly and 200 free relay in 07 08 (2)
5 relay golds and 4 individuals
2+4+3 is 9....not the astronomical number that 13 state championships is.
