Swimmer of the year
MATT BAUMLER, SENIOR, LAFAYETTE

The Virginia Tech-bound Baumler finished his high school career by sweeping the 100-yard butterfly and 100 backstroke in the Bay Rivers District meet, then winning the 100 fly (50.91 seconds) and finishing second in the 100 back (52.31) at the Group AA state meet.

He set the state record in the 100 back as a junior, but fell short as a senior when Waynesboro’s Alvaro Vega, a Spanish exchange student, edged him by 0.31 of a second.

In this year’s Kecoughtan Invitational, competing against some of the top swimmers in southeastern Virginia, he won the 100 fly by three-quarters of a second and the 100 back by more than half a second.

Baumler finished his high school career with six individual gold medals and seven relay golds at the state meet. In individual races or relay events, he or his team never finished lower than second.

First team

200 freestyle: Corydon Butler, Senior, Jamestown
Butler proved himself to be the best long-distance freestyle swimmer in the area. He won the Bay Rivers District title and was the area’s top finisher in the Kecoughtan Invitational and Group AA state meet. His time of 1:43.81 was the area’s best.

200 IM: Kohl Hurdle, Sophomore, Warwick
Hurdle dominated this event locally. He won the Peninsula District meet by 10 seconds, then set one of his two records in the Eastern Region meet. In the Kecoughtan Invitational, he swam 1:57.74 to win that event.

50 freestyle: Scott Cutler, Junior, Jamestown
Cutler won at the Kecoughtan Invitational and the Bay Rivers District meet, then finished second at state by a half-second. His best time was 21.55 in the state meet.

100 butterfly: Mason Wilcox, Junior, Menchville
Wilcox set an Eastern Region record in winning this event and won the Peninsula District championship. He finished fifth in the Group AAA state meet and had a best time of 51.16 for a pool measured in yards.

100 freestyle: Ryan Hartman, Senior, Grafton
Hartman capped his high school career by swimming the area’s best time in the Group AA state meet, finishing in 48.26 seconds.

500 freestyle: Corydon Butler, Senior, Jamestown
As he did in the 200 freestyle, Butler was the best in the 500 free. He won the Bay Rivers District meet and finished fourth in the state meet. His time of 4:42.90 in the district meet led the area.

100 backstroke: Kohl Hurdle, Sophomore, Warwick
Another regional championship and another regional record for Hurdle. He won the Eastern Region meet by more than a second-and-a-half after winning the Peninsula District title by six seconds. His best time was 53.16 seconds.

Jamestown swept the season’s major meets, winning the Kecoughtan Invitational, the Bay Rivers District meet by three seconds and the state meet by five seconds. The Eagles’ 3:13.26 time at state was the area’s best.
Diving: Ben Davidson, Junior, Jamestown
After finishing third at state in 2007, Davidson eclipsed the former state record by winning the Group AA title with 367.25 points.

Re: Story: Daily Press All-Stars

baumler only had 9 state golds....not 13

none in 04 05

1st in 100 back 200 free relay and 200 medley relay in 05 06 (3)

1st in 100 back 100 fly 200 free relay and 200 medley relay in 06 07 (4)

1st in 100 fly and 200 free relay in 07 08 (2)

5 relay golds and 4 individuals

2+4+3 is 9....not the astronomical number that 13 state championships is.
