Lewis staying at Penn State
When Rene Portland resigned as Penn State’s women’s basketball coach in March, it left Hampton High center Evelyn Lewis, who had already signed a basketball scholarship there, uncertain about her future with the Nittany Lions.
“She (Portland) called me and told me,” Lewis said. “I took it pretty hard.” But after weighing her options and being in constant contact with current Penn State players, Lewis has decided to honor her commitment. “I keep in touch with a lot of the players, and they were just telling me that they were gonna stick it out,” Lewis said. “It’s not like you can just leave a school because a coach did. If you’re going to a school just because of the coach, then that’s not a good choice anyway.” Lewis helped lead the Crabbers to a Group AAA state title on March 10. She was named second team all-state and a Daily Press first teamer. -- Jason Jordan
