Pen. Dist. Junior Varsity Baseball

While I very much appreciate the coverage that the DP gives to varsity baseball in the area, I wish it would, at a minimum, publish the scores of the jv games. Our area is rich in baseball talent, which can be seen at both the varsity and the jv levels. Most of the schools that I have seen play this season have at least a couple of really talented young men who will populate the varsity ranks next year, if not later this season. I am particularly impressed with the 8th grade talent on display this year, most notably at Hampton, Phoebus and Menchville.

I suggest that the DP follow the same rules for reporting jv baseball as it used to have for reporting Little League baseball (and which it should reinstitute for Little League/Cal Ripken as well for the same reasons) -- based on called in reports from the winning or home coach, print the line score, the name of the winning pitcher with record, the name of the losing pitcher with record, and the names of all players who had two or more hits, or who had a home run. In fact, given the advancements in technology, I would think that the DP could set up a site where the coaches could put into the system the same information directly from their office/home. By doing so, the DP easily picks up more readers, as the boys (and girls, as the rules would apply to jv girls softball as well) will start the habit of picking up the newspaper each morning to see their names or to follow the performance of their rivals.

Not sure about putting as much info. for jv scores as you would varsity scores in the newspaper is the best thing. I mean, it's jv. The only ones that care about jv scores and stats are the coaches themselves and parents of players. No one else really cares, and that's coming from a former jv coach. However, I love your idea about possibly setting up a website where coaches are able to put in scores and high scorers for bball, winning pitcher and multi-hit players for bball, leading goal scorer for soccer, or td catches and rushing yards for football. Maybe just another forum added to HRvarsity would make this a reality.

You should ask Lynn about this, send him a private email, he will most likely see it on this post.
It is a good idea as stated, should not be a big push for the newspaper, all it does is bring credit and exposure to a program. When I coached up in Cape Cod the schools up there would write about Freshman, JV, and Varsity...they do love baseball up there, but I believe the PD fans do as well.

How about a poll question on this one?

Take care,
jamey

Re: Pen. Dist. Junior Varsity Baseball

Almost every JV sport has a complimentary varsity game on the same day except for football....if the coach sends in the game scores to the same folks from their school that report the varsity details fo the DP...then the JV score gets posted...

It is the school or parents responsiblility to get data to the DP....
Who do you think puts the box score etc data into the paper....you don't see reporters at every game......SOMEONE calls them in so quit whining.....get the JV coach or scorekeeper to send their stuff into the Varsity person that reports in...

Crimeny

IT is JV for crying out loud...

With some other sports, mainly field hockey in the fall and basketball in the winter, varsity coaches or whomever calls in the varsity results also gives us the JV score ... in some cases.

Given that we're dealing with lots of schools and lots of sports, we simply cannot put much emphasis on JV sports in the newspaper. However, one of the reasons we started the JV message board here was for people to post and exchange information on JV teams and players.
