Softball: New Kent struggling a bit
New Kent was everybody’s pick to defend its Bay Rivers District softball championship, and it just might. But after Thursday’s loss to Bruton, their third in four games, the Trojans are off to a 4-3 start.
This from a team that lost four games last season in advancing to the Group AA final.
“It’s been disappointing, but we know there’s been a big target on our backs,” head coach Betsey Lane said. “We’re the team everybody wants to beat. We’ve got to regroup and start the second half off with a bang.”
New Kent won its first three games but has lost to York (1-0), Poquoson (3-0) and Bruton (6-3) in the last 18 days.
“Our defense hasn’t been as good as it has been,” Lane said. “We’ve already made more errors this year than we did in all of last year. And that hasn’t been helping.”
