District team player selections

This process for the girls in the peninsula district needs to be changed. It has been that the coaches with the most swaying ability get their players in and there are players who have a greater ability who do not get selected at all. As a matter of fact some high schools did not get any players on the district and one high school in particular was not the last in the league and nnot even the next to last, and they had a couple of good players that were over looked. I would like to see this process changed so that it is more objective.

Re: District team player selections

i completely agree. I believe if the players nominated two players from each team that they thought deserved 1st team and then two players they thought deserved 2nd team, the picks would be evenly spread out. then the coaches could decide the rest of the line up.

Re: District team player selections

Menchville's coach and Glouster's think that if they are the top teams they should have the most players on the team. This is what started players moving to other schools to play. Woodsides coach was new last year so none of his players made a team. Glouster's Athletic directer is incharge and that isn't good either. I think there needs to be a neutral party incharge of this process. Maybe the head of the referees for the peninsula.

Re: District team player selections

I have to somewhat disagree here... Menchville's varsity coach was not even able to attend last year (his Jv coach was there) and the AD does not sit in on the meetings at all. Each coach has the opportunity to nominate players and then ALL of the coaches vote and you cannot vote for your own players. We all go around and explain why we are putting the players up that we are and actually there is usually more feedback from other coaches about other team's players. One thing that one coach did this year was give me a list of possible (keep in mind that this list may change as the season goes on) players to look at during the game. This helped me to keep an eye on them while noticing other players as well. To be honest, he was right on the mark with a couple of them...

The tides are turning so you will really have to trust the coaches to be fair. Last year's meeting was ten times better than the year before. But, you also have to give credit where credit is due... Gloucester has always had strong players that have kept them at the top. It would be unfair to not respect that when it comes to looking at the best players in the district.

The bottom line is that ALL of the coaches that attend the meeting have an opportunity to vote... That is ten (technically nine) votes for each player that is placed on the district team. Usually it is pretty close when it comes down to it...

Re: District team player selections

I was told that the rules for selection were set up by the Glouter AD and that he runs the selection process. (Whether he is there or not) Also a coach does not have to be there, for the word to get out from him ahead of time who he wants. I think each coach shold watch the games they play, without input from other coaches and the coach writes down what he sees for the best defender, midfielder and forward on each team. Bring that info back to the table with stats on goals and asists and then lay it all out. I have heard some coaches are changing their stats to get the people they want in. This not fair and terrible role modeling because the players know their stats.

I am glad it is getting better, but it still has some way to go.

Re: District team player selections

Actually no... Every meeting he comes in to facilitate the organizing of the meeting, but then it is left up to the coaches as to how they want to handle it. He may give suggestions, but it is ultimately up to the coaches. He leaves the room and we go from there. He really has been impartial, in my opinion, at all of the meetings I have attended.

Coaches have discussed EVERY year I have been in attendance that all coaches should note players from each team that they notice during their game. They then come into the meeting with notes so when a player is discussed they can give their input.

A coach does not have to be there, but the only way a coach can represent their team and players is to be there to give input. It is a round table discussion... Then we vote.

Honestly, stats to me do not mean anything because not all players are going to have stats... Plus, if any other teams have as hard a time as we do keeping track of stats then it may not be completely accurate to begin with. A player is either noticably good or not. If it is missed in one game another coach will notice it in another game.

Maybe I am missing something, but I reallty feel that things are not all that bad when it comes to our district selections. All of the coaches seem to get along very well and are very respectful in this meeting. It has gotten heated at times, but that is what makes them good meetings...

Re: District team player selections

I sounds better so I hope it all works out. My concerns stem from another coaches view two years ago and then no selections for Woodside last year.
