Schultz-Avery 4-6, 6-2, 6-0. Records — Denbigh 8-0, 8-0 Peninsula District; Menchville 7-1, 7-1. In girls tennis Wednesday, Denbigh took the Peninsula District regular-season crown with a 5-4 victory at Menchville — a match of unbeaten teams that took about 4 1/2 hours and included five three-setters. Menchville will join Denbigh in the Eastern Region tournament, provided the Monarchs win their finale against Woodside, a heavy underdog. Wednesday's match was a reversal of last year's close Menchville victory over Denbigh that gave the Monarchs first place and the Patriots runner-up status. The Patriots' No. 1 Shelby Hernandez, No. 2 Annie Armamento and No. 4 Jessica Pineda gained victories, with only Armamento's coming in straight sets. Menchville forced a 3-3 tie entering doubles on triumphs by No. 3 Marie Hidalgo, No. 5 Abby Gillen and No. 6 Toby Eisenberg. In doubles, Hernandez and Pineda edged Nancy Sumner and Jenna Hixon 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, and Armamento and Katie Conides clinched it with a 1-6, 6-1, 6-1 win over Hidalgo and Jessica Sain. That made the score 5-3, just before Gillen and Eisenberg completed a 6-0 third-set victory at third doubles. "It was a barnburner," Denbigh coach Andy Hawkins said. "We know it was gonna be. We're survivors here, the last ones standing, whoever could stay in the longest. He came up 5-4 last year, and I was lucky enough to come up 5-4 this year. "My girls got down a little bit and showed an awful lot of heart, and his girls got down a little bit and showed an awful lot of heart." Menchville coach Marvin Hedgepeth said, "Andy and I are both happy about not having to finish it tomorrow after our other matches. It was exactly the kind of match we had last year."
