Braig nets 100th tennis victory
Braig nets 100th tennis victory
By Sonny Dearth|247-4640
Jamestown coach Bob Artis says senior Jacob Braig became the first male Eagle to win 100 high school tennis matches, combining singles and doubles.
Braig’s 100th victory came in doubles as Jamestown, a Bay Rivers District co-leader, won 9-0 last week at Poquoson. He and freshman Elliot Mee defeated Michael Freeman and John Hallum 8-0.
Braig, in his second year as the Eagles’ everyday No. 1 player, is blessed with height (6-foot-3) and a big serve and forehand. He usually played No. 2 or 3 in his first two seasons, often behind his older brother, John — just finishing his sophomore year at Christopher Newport — and/or Lorenzo Sison. That trio carried the Eagles to the 2005 Region I team championship.
Now, Jacob Braig and Tabb’s Adi Shetty seem destined for close competition to decide who will represent Region I at the state tournament — certainly in singles, where three-time state champion Yakov Diskin of Grafton had reigned before graduating, and also possibly in team play and doubles.
"I’ve never coached a kid this good with character and ability," Artis said of Braig.
