Denbigh has put itself in contention for a run at the Peninsula District girls soccer championship, or at least an Eastern Region appearance. The Patriots (7-4, 5-0 PD) have beaten four-time defending district champion Menchville and visit Gloucester (7-4, 5-0) today at
5 p.m. in a battle for first place.
Gloucester (7-4, 5-0) shut out Kecoughtan 3-0 Friday.
Denbigh has five freshmen on its roster and its top player is midfielder Dani Gunderson, a sophomore and team captain. She was first team all-district as a freshman.
Midfielder Daven Ralston is the only senior. She and junior back Brittany Schaller are the other captains.
"We are passing well and anticipating much more than we ever have in the past," said Denbigh coach Ashley Via. "The program has come so far in the last two years."
Warwick, Bethel and a May 10 regular-season finale with Kecoughtan remain on Denbigh’s schedule after today.
