Poquoson Senior Claims A/AA Statewide Gymnastics Title


HARRISONBURG, VA—Poquoson Gymnast Caitlyn Cook Furr captured first place on three events to become the VHSL A/AA state champion and earned a spot to compete against triple A schools in Alexandria next week.

Coach Bob Semes said, “Caitlyn is getting a little better every week. Last week she scored a meet high 37.05 at the Peninsula District Qualifier. Today she scored a 37.4 to take the double A championship.”

Furr took first place on the beam with a 9.325. She performed a series of difficult tumbling skills including a combination back handspring, back layout. She finished with a variety of jumps and a front layout full dismount.

She scored first place on the vault with a 9.375 by performing a Pike Tsukahara, a move developed by and named for the Japanese Olympian who won the gold medal on the vault.

With a 9.55, the uneven parallel bars were her best event and clinched the championship. Furr mounted the bars with a peachbasket and performed two rarely seen skills--the Endo and Stalder. She added two bar changes, several giants and executed a toe front landing.

Coach Semes said “You rarely see the combination Stalder and Endo except at the Olympics. Caitlyn has the exceptional flexibility and the brute strength to execute these skills very well.”

The floor was the only event Furr did not win first place. She scored a 9.15 which earned her fourth place.

A/AA State wide Gymnastics Meet ADD/ONE

“She earned bonus points for her dancing moves and sparkling personae on her floor exercise, “ Semes said.

Three other Poquoson Gymnasts represented the Bay Rivers District on the beam and vault. Molly Semes competed on the balance beam while freshman Claire Kubilins and sophomore Julia Hoback vied on the vault.

“This is one of the youngest teams in Virginia double a schools. Everyone of our girls stepped up and competed with the confidence of seasoned gymnasts. I think Julia, Molly, Claire and Brittany will qualify in multiple events and be strong competitors state wide for the next several years, “ Semes said.

Baillie Anton, a senior at Poquoson, qualified to compete on the bars but was unable to attend the meet. A bright up and coming star for the Islanders is eight grader Brittany Saetre. She had a state qualifying score in every event but was ineligible to compete at the high school level.


Loudon County Gymnast Vicki Vesecky won second place behind Furr with a 36.4 total score.

The state wide meet was held at Harrisonsburg High School. Eight teams from double a schools across the state earned the right to complete at the event.
