Ruling changes Bethel's loss to a tie
Ruling changes Bethel loss to a tie By Melinda Waldrop |mwaldrop@dailypress.com The Bethel Bruins got some good news on Friday, learning that a game they thought they lost to Woodside on Tuesday actually ended in a tie. The Bruins, playing at home, trailed the Wolverines 5-4 after the top of the sixth, but scored the tying run on a balk in the bottom of the inning. The game was then called because of rain. Coaches originally thought the final score reverted back to the last completed inning, but then discovered that wasn't true. According to the Virginia High School League, if the home team scores the tying or winning run in the final inning played, completed or not, that score stands. "The rule is that if the home team scores the tying or winning run, just like any other ending to a game (in) their last half-inning, that that score does count," said Tom Dolan, VHSL assistant director of athletics. "Therefore, the game is a tie." It's a result Bethel coach Brett Wheeler definitely will take. His team is now 10-4-1 and alone in third place in the Peninsula District standings with a week left in the regular season. "It's a lot better being 10-4-1 than 10-5," Wheeler said. "At least this way it puts us at three, a half game behind Menchville. We're in third place alone." The Bruins' next test is a big one, but it won't be immediate. Bethel's matchup against first-place Denbigh, scheduled for today, has been postponed until Monday because Wheeler has to be out of town. The game will be played at Denbigh at 4:30 p.m. "That's a big one for us," Wheeler said.

Re: Ruling changes Bethel's loss to a tie
I don't understand how a game with possible playoff implications could end in a tie. This isn't Japan. Should'nt the game be finished. Wouldn't it be better for Bethel to finish the game which could possibly bump them into the 2 spot in the district. I know the game was called due to weather/ field conditions. Can't they just finish the game though. Who would have a problem with that? .....................Besides Menchville?
